Recorded at Total Refreshment Centre and produced by Kristian Craig Robinson (AKA Capitol K), of the Archie Bronson Outfit - who has previously recorded the likes of Bradford Cox of Deerhunter.
Living in both London and Berlin, VENN encompass an impressive mix of musical influences on RUNE001 - from the more industrial-leaning sounds of early 70s West Germany, up to the bourgeoning post-punk influenced scene of early-millennial Atlanta.
The experimental essence of both eras is captured in Venn’s unconstrained recording process, with the inclusion of live takes, sampling and assertive rhythmic changes throughout.
A snapshot in time, the EP was performed in the studio and then chopped, dubbed and reassembled by the band, with lost sounds – now unremembered to VENN – finding their way back into these current compositions. These sporadic and improvised parts, such as the inclusion of vinyl being dragged backwards on a turntable, all contribute to the alluring bricolage that is RUNE001.
‘It feels like we could keep working on the songs and in a year they’d be different still, but it’s just as exciting to purge a moment’, explain the band on the recording process.
Take opener ‘Vultures’, which first meanders through a dreamlike five-minute introduction, which is then pulled into a different realm entirely with rising, motorik drumming, torn through by piercing guitar.
It doesn’t let up; ‘Analytes’ keeps the intensity with infectious loops of bass guitar before lead-track ‘Real Blood’ offers another example of VENN’s experimentation and spontaneous resourcefulness:
A tale of two halves, the engrossing bounce of ‘Real Blood’ mixes with subtle synth during the song’s first act, before the lead guitar is let loose in a mesmeric close.
More instrumental experimentation bridges ‘A Smaller Part’ into the EP’s concluding track ‘Bigger Fiction’, a closer that ebbs and flows between pulsating, synth heavy choruses and direct, building breaks.

While I'm a huge fan of electronic music, I love when these projects also introduce a narrative aspect. The unfolding history of Martin's musical journey adds such a wonderful dimension while listening to these albums. Not to mention the great visuals, too.
